The Carolina Reaper Chilli

The Carolina Reaper Chilli was originally named the HP22B and is of the Capsicum chinense species. Currently the hottest chilli in the world, the Carolina Reaper Chilli was originally bred in Rock Hill, South Carolina by Ed "Smokin'" Currie. Ed Currie is President and self-professed mad scientist and founder of the PuckerButt Pepper Company. The Carolina Reaper was rated as the world's hottest chilli pepper by the Guinness World Records on the 7th August 2013. It's a cross between a ghost pepper (Native to Assam) (previously a world record holder) and a red habanero (Native To Mexico and similar to the Carribean Scotch Bonnet). The official Guinness World Record is 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) and was tested by Winthrop University in South Carolina. In addition, as the overall figure is an average of a tested batch, it's worth noting that the hottest individual pepper was measured at 2.3 million SHU. The award was presented to Ed Currie by Guinness World Records at the Annual New York City Hot Sauce Expo on the 30th March 2014.
